Pentax K-x - Best Entry Level Budget DSLR

For anyone thinking of buying their first Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera, the
Pentax K-x could be the camera that they can't live without. In a category that has a good range of choices from the major manufacturers, the Pentax K-x stands out as the well-priced choice with the best package of features. It is the best DSLR camera for beginners. Buyers may be surprised by how much they can get in a DSLR at this price. The K-x is a 12.4 megapixel camera with 720p video (1280x720) at 24 frames per second and a burst mode of 4.7 frames per second. It provides outstanding picture quality, and the best-in-class performance in low-light situations. The K-x has image stabilization in the camera (to offset shake) allowing it to use any of the 90 lenses available from Pentax.

The K-x inherits some of its features from more expensive Pentax cameras like the K-7. It has the same 11-point AF system and PRIME II imaging engine as the K-7, along with its abilities to correct for chromatic aberration and distortion when using Pentax DA and DFA lenses. It also features an orientation sensor. It has the same 1/6000 shutter speed as the K-r and this is a best-in-class feature for both of these cameras. The Pentax cameras all feature high ISO ratings and the K-x is no exception. It has a rating of 12,800 ISO with Boost. That's another "best-in-class" feature that helps to set this camera apart from its competition. One more feature that sets this camera apart is the ability to do HDR (High Dynamic Range) processing in the camera. This allows you to bracket a picture with three different exposure levels and let the camera blend them together.

Good specs are important but how do purchasers of the K-x rate the camera after using it? In the Amazon Customer Reviews for the K-x, 91% of the ratings were a 4 or a 5 (out of 5) with a large majority rating it as a 5 / 5. This is a very positive vote of confidence for this relatively inexpensive DSLR. All 10 of the individual categories were rated well; with picture quality and value for the money rated the highest.

So, how can potential purchasers decide if this is the right camera for them? With many good choices available, it may not be an easy decision. Before settling on the K-x, buyers may want to consider the pros and cons of the advanced Point and Shoot cameras such as the Panasonic FZ100 or the additional benefits of the next tier of DSLRs with cameras such as the Sony a560. More information on the DSLR vs Point and Shoot decision can be found on the Core4 website (see link below). In the end, the right answer depends on how you want to use the camera, the results that you expect and how much you want to spend. If the decision is to buy an entry-level DSLR, Core4 Digital Labs recommends the Pentax K-x.
